At some point in their life, most men will experience prostate enlargement, also called BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia). More than 90% of men over age 80 are affected.

In men, urine flows from the bladder through the urethra. As the prostate cells gradually multiply, its enlargement presses on the urethra and causes bladder problems. While many mature adults suffer occasional memory lapses, more serious cognitive impairment typically also involves difficulty with language, motor skills, recognition and abstract thinking. It usually strikes individuals over the age of 60.

The most common cognitive disorder is characterized by a progressive accumulation of the protein fragment beta-amyloid (plaques) outside neurons in the brain and twisted strands of the protein tau (tangles) inside neurons. These changes are eventually accompanied by the damage and death of neurons.
