Men Over 40: Be Aware of Prostate Health
by Dr. Gary Gendron, D.C., C.C.S.P, C.C.N., D.A.C.B.N., D.C.B.C.N.
"Out of sight, out of mind" – that's how most men feel about their prostate. Yet 67% of all men over 40 will be affected by prostate problems during their lifetime and prostate health is something every man should be concerned about.
According to the latest research, as men age, changing male hormone levels can cause the cells of the prostate to multiply. With no room to move, the prostate gland can become enlarged, leaving sufferers uncomfortable, sleepless... even sexually embarrassed. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
The prostate is a sex gland. About the size of a walnut, it surrounds the neck of the bladder and urethra - the tube that carries urine from the bladder. It is partly muscular and partly glandular. There are 9 nutrients that support for proper urination and sexual function. Recent research verifies these 9 specific ingredients for their "synergistic" effect.
- Saw Palmetto: Helps inhibit DHT testosterone that triggers prostate growth, and relieve urinary complaints associated with an enlarged prostate.
- Pygeum: Contains powerful properties that help sexual performance due to aging.
- Lycopene: In a six year study by the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, the diets of more than 47,000 men were studied. Of the 46 fruits and vegetables evaluated, only the tomato products (which contain large quantities of lycopene) showed measurable relationship to prostate protection.
- Zinc: Is an antioxidant powerhouse.
- Vitamin E: Has countless benefits including protecting cell membrane integrity and immunity, reducing cellular aging, and inhibiting the damaging peroxynitrite free radical.
- Nettle Root: Actually works at the hormonal level to help inhibit DHT testosterone that triggers prostate growth in men over 50. And it’s PROVEN to lessen the frequency of nighttime urination.
- Selenium: Is targeted antioxidant protection for the prostate gland and semen.
- Iodine: Rich in B-Vitamins, trace elements and minerals to nutritionally support the prostate.
- Pumpkin Seed: Provide a balanced blend of essential fatty acids.

Best Foods for Prostate Health
by Gary Gendron, D.C., C.C.S.P., C.C.N., D.A.C.B.N.
Half of all men over the age of 50 will experience prostate problems sometime in their life. But the good news is there are things you can do today to help protect yours. Many of my patients ask me what foods they can eat to protect their prostate health.
Begin by adding these prostate-friendly foods to your diet:
- Tomatoes. Include tomatoes/lycopene and other carotenoids in your diet. Carotenoids are yellow, orange and red pigments found in foods like carrots and tomatoes. The most common types of carotenoids are alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene. Research suggests that carotenoids help scavenge free radicals that can cause damage.
- Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, turnips and watercress. Eat plenty of cruciferous vegetables. These plants belong to the mustard family and are rich in phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) which can be healthy for your system. For those who can’t eat fresh vegetables, consider trying freeze-dried vegetable tablets that also provide numerous health benefits.
- Turmeric. Flavor your foods with the curry spice, turmeric, also known as curcumin. Curcumin alone or in conjunction with the cruciferous vegetables listed above can be a powerful combination for your prostate.
- Garlic, onion, chives. Increase consumption of garlic, onions and chives. These vegetables appear to provide many health benefits.
- Parsley. Closely related to the carrot, parsley supports healthy bladder function.
- Pumpkin seed. A good source of zinc and EFAs, pumpkin seed is a classic prostate-supporting nutrient.
- Drink green tea. Green tea, in particular is a strong antioxidant rich in catechins and other polyphenols.
If you find it difficult to eat right, I often recommend my patients try prostate-supporting supplements that contain the nutrients I mention above. Prostate 9 Complex from Botanic Choice is one such comprehensive formula that has been used and trusted by over 250,000 men. In addition to lycopene, it also gives you saw palmetto, which helps inhibit DHT testosterone, pumpkin seed oil, a rich source of fatty acids, and vitamin E, a cell-protecting nutrient.
