But, how much digital use is too much? It\u2019s been\nsaid that social media provides the ideal narcissistic environment to lower\nyour self-esteem! What?? How can that be? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have started posting on social media innocently enough \u2013 sharing a cool picture, a satisfying meal, or awesome vacation. \u00a0Unfortunately, too many people post on social media in order to compare their lives to others and gain approval through likes and comments. Ironically, this ends up making them feel less satisfied with their own life. But it\u2019s not just social media\u2026it\u2019s digital devices in general that may be to blame and need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicchoice.com\/blog\/health-and-wellness\/how-to-detox-your-body-naturally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detox<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Screen Addiction Studied<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kate Unsworth, CEO of Kovert Designs, recruited\nneuroscientists, philosophers and psychologists to study how technology impacts\nbehavior, body language and life satisfaction. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her team observed participants over four nights \u2013 one\nwith their digital devices, three in a desert without them. They concluded: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Digital means less productivity, focus and adventure. <\/strong>Digital devices are a constant distraction from real life which affects how productive you are and how open you are to new adventures. \u00a0Memory also improves. \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disconnecting means better sleep. <\/strong>Your devices emit blue light which decreases melatonin production by 22% affecting sleep, performance and mood. Participants reported feeling more rejuvenated in the morning. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disconnect to connect.<\/strong> Without constantly looking down at a phone, people start to make better <a aria-label=\"eye (opens in a new tab)\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicchoice.com\/blog\/health-and-wellness\/best-eye-supplement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eye<\/a> contact paving the way for deeper, more meaningful conversations. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Better posture. <\/strong>Now that there\u2019s better <a aria-label=\"eye (opens in a new tab)\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicchoice.com\/vision-health-lutein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eye<\/a> contact, focus shifts to what is in front of you \u2013 opening up your chest, realigning your spine, and making you more approachable. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Less impulsivity.<\/strong> Checking your phone activates the frontal cortex the same way substance addiction does. Participants experienced more intense mindfulness and a greater awareness of the importance of relationships, careers, health and goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While turning your device off or leaving it at home for awhile may seem overwhelming, you can start small and dedicate time each day to unplug. Try doing something where you don\u2019t need your phone such as going to the beach, hiking, taking a nap, or enjoying a meal. Psychologists say your bedroom should be dedicated to activities associated with relaxation \u2013 this includes leaving digital assets in the hall.
