When you think of marshmallow you probably think of the fluffy white confection on top your hot chocolate or in your s'mores. But Marshmallow Root's been around for centuries prized for its medicinal value. 

A member of the hibiscus family, marshmallow root was originally used in traditional Greek medicine then later in Ayurvedic medicine. Its botanical name, althaea officinalis, is derived from Greek meaning "to cure or to heal" and was used for wounds.  Common names include Althea Root, Sweet Weed and Marsh Mallow. Marshmallow root is a perennial native to Europe but now also found in the western United States. It is often discovered along riverbanks, roadsides and other marshy places. The plant grows to about five feet and bears a light red, white or purple hibiscus-like flower. All parts of the plant have been used for herbal remedies, cosmetics, cooking, and even decoration.

A Demulcent for Calming Comfort
Herbalists have used Marshmallow Root to soothe teething babies, cool throats, and protect sensitive tissues. Today we know that Marshmallow Root contains naturally occurring trace amounts of polysaccharides, flavonoids, amino acids, zinc, B-vitamins, beta-carotene, calcium, vitamin C and more. As an herbal remedy it's classified at a demulcent.

In its simpliest terms, a demulcent is a substance that soothes, coats and protects delicate tissues, especially mucous membranes like those found in the throat, stomach or intestines. They work by forming a soft, protective film over delicate tissues, helping ease dryness or discomfort. Many demulcents come from plants rich in mucilage (a gel-like substance). The best known demulcents are: marshmallow root, slippery elm, licorice root, aloe vera and honey. 

Demulcents are often included to make formulas gentler on the stomach, support gut lining health and comfort sensitive digestion. For many, it's a go-to for cold, dry weather to help hydrate and retain moisture in the bronchial system.
