Hydrastis canadensis
Goldenseal benefits:
- Fortifies your immune system
- Stimulates the liver
- Eliminates toxins
Found in large quantities in the eastern part of the Midwest, including Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio, Goldenseal is found in shady, moist soils. It belongs to the Buttercup family. Goldenseal is a small perennial herb, bright yellow in full color. The flowering stem, which emerges in the early spring, reaches to be about a foot tall, with numerous stamens. While Native Americans used Goldenseal as an eye treatment, American pioneers used it externally to cleanse skin irritations and internally for seasonal or digestive concerns. It was used extensively during the Civil War. Today, herbalists recommend it for its ability to help boost the immune system, especially when used in conjunction with echinacea.
