Native to Europe, ground-creeping Chickweed can be found throughout the world. It is often considered a weed and can be found growing through sidewalk cracks and along highways. It sprawls across moist, fertile soil to a length of about fifteen inches and bears small, star-shaped white flowers. Its name is derived from the fact that young birds and chicks eat its seeds.  The leaves are edible with a spinach flavor and make a nice addition to a salad. Its botanical name is Stellaria media and common names include Starweed, Tongue Grass, Satin Flower and Winterweed.
