Native to the tropical forests of India and Southeast Asia, gymnema is a woody plant with a long history in the Ayurvedic apothecary. Today it is recognized in the traditional systems of certain Asian countries. While the leaves are most commonly used, roots and stems are also occasionally used.
Gymnema means "naked" and sylvestre means "from the forest." Gymnema is also known as gurmarbooti, meshasringi, merasingi, pericploca of the woods, Asclepias geminata and Pinus sylvestris.
