How to use coconut oil for hair
It’s easy to make your own mask specific to your needs. Here are a few recipes to get you started.
For dry hair
- 1 Tbsp. Coconut Oil
- 1 Tbsp. Castor Oil
- 1 Egg

Melt the herbal coconut oil. In a separate boil whisk the egg and combine it with the cooled coconut oil. Add castor oil and whisk again for consistency. Separate clean, damp hair into sections and working from the root to the ends, massage into hair. Wrap hair in a towel for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse thoroughly, repeating as needed to remove any excess oil.
For dull hair
- 2 Tbsp. Coconut Oil
- 1 Tbsp. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
- 1 Tbsp. Honey
After melting and cooling the coconut oil, combine it with ACV and honey. Apply the mask to dry or damp hair. Leave on for 15-20 minutes, then rinse out and follow your routine shampoo and conditioner.

For frizzy hair
- ½ ripe Banana
- 1 Tbsp. Coconut Oil
Using a blender, mix banana and coconut oil together until smooth and creamy. Massage onto hair for 10 minutes, rinse and follow up with routine shampooing and conditioning.
Overnight recovery
- 2 Tbsp Coconut Oil, melted
Apply coconut oil to damp or dry hair and let the deep-conditioning oil soak in overnight. Be sure to put a towel down over your pillow so the oil doesn’t seep through. Shampoo and condition as normal. Can be done weekly for over-processed, damaged hair.
For itchy scalp
- 2 Tbsp. Coconut oil
- 2 Tbsp. Aloe Vera Gel
After melting and cooling the coconut oil, mix in aloe vera gel, targeting the root and scalp before working into the ends. Leave mask on for 15 minutes, rinse and complete your hair routine. This mask can be left on overnight also.
Depending on your type of hair – thick, coarse, fine, curly – you may need to adjust the amount of coconut oil you use. For most types, coconut oil will not weigh down your hair or make it oily but will leave it feeling soft and healthy.
