Why Should I Switch to a Natural Deodorant?

While there is no direct link between chemicals found in conventional deodorants and specific health issues, if natural deodorants can do the same job, there’s no reason not to make the switch. Read more about aluminum-free deodorants now.

What’s the difference between a deodorant and an antiperspirant?

Traditional deodorants use alcohol-based ingredients and antimicrobial agents to prevent bacteria, which is the cause of the odor, from growing. Antiperspirants use aluminum-based ingredients to block your pores from releasing sweat. Combined they are an effective solution for both odor and sweat. In fact, the vast majority of deodorants are also antiperspirants. Deodorant/antiperspirants also often contain synthetic fragrances and other chemicals to give them their shape, consistency or ability to stick to your skin.

Why switch to a natural deodorant

Here are a few reasons people ditch the traditional deodorant and go natural.

  1. Sweating is your body’s way of cooling off. Chemically-laden antiperspirants can clog pores and inhibit your natural sweating process.
  2. Traditional deodorants can cause bumpy, rough, irritated skin.
  3. Aluminum has been shown to react with fabric. This is what creates those annoying yellow stains on white t-shirts.
  4. Natural, aluminum-free deodorant can easily tackle body odor, and some ingredients in natural deodorants can also shrink pores and soothe irritated skin.
  5. Switching to a natural deodorant gives you peace of mind that you’re decreasing the amount of chemicals you use daily.

How to switch to a natural deodorant:

It’s important to note that natural deodorant will help with odor, not sweat. Sweat is actually a good thing. When you’re ready to make the switch, follow these guidelines.

  • Wash underarms daily. For additional help, you might consider washing armpits with charcoal soap.
  • Exfoliate underarms weekly.
  • During the transition, wear natural fabrics like cotton.
  • Look for ingredients like baking soda, essential oils, witch hazel, beeswax, tea tree oil and shea butter.
  • Monitor your skin for any rashes. Baking soda can irritate some people.
  • Give yourself time. Try various natural deodorants for a couple of weeks to give your body time to adjust. You may have to try a few before you find the right one.

There are many reasons why people switch to a natural deodorant, but it usually boils down to chemicals found in the conventional ones. After all, most of us would prefer using products with ingredients we can actually pronounce. And with so many natural, aluminum-free deodorants readily available, more people are making the switch.
