Oat Milk: A Tasty, Non-Dairy Alternative

As more Americans reduce their consumption of animal and dairy products, non-dairy milk is becoming hugely popular. A quick stroll down the grocery aisles and you’ll see milk from almonds, soy, rice, macadamia, coconut and hemp. Recently, oat milk has come onto the scene. It’s creamy and doesn’t have a nutty flavor like some of the nut-based milks, so it’s good in coffee, poured over granola or added to your smoothie.

From a health standpoint, it’s chock-full of calcium, low in fat and sugar and cholesterol-free. Best of all, it’s simple and inexpensive to make oat milk at home with the following oat milk recipe. All you need is a blender and mesh strainer and you’re good to go.

Oat Milk Recipe

Here’s how to make oat milk at home:

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cup steel cut oats
  • 4 cups water

Optional Ingredients

  • 1 TBL maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Blend the oats and water together for about a minute.
  2. Using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, squeeze out the milk from the oats into a bowl.
  3. Pour into a mason jar or pitcher with tight fitting lid. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week. Shake well before using. Can be served warm or cold.

Note: When warmed, oat milk can thicken and have a different texture. It’s best to try a small amount to see how you like it.

If you’re looking for a tasty, non-dairy alternative that’s low cost, give oat milk a try.
